Prehistoric sanctuary, which dates back to the second half of the sixth millennium BC, was found out during construction works in “Gradina” camping near Sozopol resort.
The archaeologists have discovered the finding by accident and studied the region for several months, inform moreto.net.
During the construction activities of complex “Black sea star", a group of archaeologists, led by the specialist on prehistory Peter Leshtakov from the National archaeological institute found the remaining of a prehistoric sanctuary. The sanctuary is situated on an area of around ten decares and the thickness of the cultural layer is around one meter.
They inform the owner of the place, “Star Mill” company, which is also investor of the project about their finding. The company agrees to sponsor the diggings of the archaeologists. The place is one of the earliest found at the Black sea and is also one of the earliest on the Balkans. In a shaft deep nearly six meters, the archaeologists found pieces of wood, which dates back to the third quarter of the sixth millennium before Christ. According to them this is the oldest tree found in Bulgaria.
The other exceptional finding is connected to the earliest forms of metal yielding. Metal pieces from the second half of the fifth millennium before Christ have been discovered.
Three prehistoric tombs were also found, which are from the early bronze era. The archaeologists believe that they give information about the social structure and the religious rituals of the population, which lived on this territory in the third millennium BC.
